Seafood and Gender Equality (SAGE)

SAGE’s Mission:

To uplift, amplify, and integrate diverse voices in the global seafood sector.

Grant Project Goal(s):

To create the foundation (Phase I) of the Gender Equality Dialogues (GED).

Background:

A survey conducted in 2018 by the NGO International Women in the Seafood Industry asked members of the seafood industry if the industry is “equally attractive and fair to both sexes.” The answers show that men and women in the sector “do not share the same perception.”

One of the key recommendations to come out of the report of the survey is that men should be engaged in discussions on gender equality. In other words, conversations with women about women is not enough.

With the support of Sea Pact, SAGE will build the foundation to launch the Gender Equality Dialogues in 2022 to engage industry leadership to discuss barriers and co-create solutions to gender equality in the seafood industry.

Immediate Objective(s):

To 1) conduct outreach to and engage seafood industry leadership and secure their support of the implementation of the GED; 2) prepare the foundation of the GED, including a budget and fundraising/sponsorship plan; and 3) create a facilitation plan to ensure the GED are productive and beneficial to participants and the industry.

Key Learnings:

The Sea Pact grant funding was instrumental in giving SAGE the opportunity to hire a consultant to build the framework and plan for the GED. We also are still in the process of determining who of the Sea Pact members will participate in the dialogues themselves, but we are confident there will be several members that will participate.

Also, collaboration is KEY! The fact that Sea Pact not only donated to SAGE to develop the GED, but will participate is a great sign that they see value in this effort and are willing to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk.
